Originally built in the 1980’s, this bungalow overlooking the Atlantic ocean from the Camps Bay’s area in Cape Town, South Africa, was the perfect house for a renovation. Built directly on a slope of a steep rock, the conditions were not ideal to expand the footprint of the house. While maintaining magnificent views to the natural landscape, adding a second floor allowed the volume to double in the main living area, bringing in ample natural light to the indoors and accessibility to the patios. The double height retractable shutters are one of the main designs of the exterior to accommodate building code restrictions with sun light/heat. The shutters and the pergola around the house eliminate the need for a mechanical cooling system during hot summer days, reducing overall building energy use.
